Nicole Ari Parker, an American actress who has appeared on film and on television, as well as on stage is best known for playing Teri Joseph, the fiery lawyer in the show Showtime's Soul Food. When she got married, she changed her name to Nikki Kodjoe. As a child, she was a natural actor. At an Maryland competition for students in high school, she was awarded the prize for the Best Actress. Following her time in the theater as well as 'The Washington Ballet Company' she received a master's diploma in acting at 'New York University. Contractor, born in Mumbai in India and grew up in Nigeria from the time she was seven. She'd been exposed to a lot of travel and cultures from a early age. From the age of seven until nine, Contractor was a student at boarding schools in London. Her family relocated to Toronto where she lived throughout her early years. Contractor trained and eventually became a dancer of classical style in Toronto. She attended the Etobicoke School of the Arts which was a highly specialized high school in which she studied not just dance but also theatre. Contractor took the decision to study acting seriously at age of 16 following almost 10 years dancing. When she completed high school, she won a full Scholarship to University of Toronto. At the University of Toronto she completed a Masters in Theatre and she also double-majored in sociology and psychology. Contractor was offered the lead character in Pericles following her one year stay in University. She auditioned for the part in the Stratford Shakespeare Festival (Ontario Canada) and won. After the show ran for 92 times, she was rewarded with praise from the audience. The play was deemed the top production by Canadian critics. She accepted the invitation to enroll in Stratford's conservatory. It is a place where only four men and eight women are able to take the 20-week crash program in classical theatre. She was scheduled to perform in the following play-season was confirmed and she received the role in Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
